My name is Sebastian Kahl, and I am an AI expert working at the intersection of cognitive science, computer science, and applied machine learning. I hold a Dr.-Ing. from Bielefeld University, where I developed computational models of how humans communicate through predictive processing, and I now bring that perspective to building practical AI systems in industry.
Today, I work as an AI Expert / Software Developer at IMES Solutions GmbH (since 2025). I research and develop AI for industrial automation, advise large chemical companies on data science and AI topics, and rapidly turn ideas into proof of concept systems for data driven, AI powered features.
Before that, I was Head of Data Science at Fronyx GmbH (2023 to 2025), where I built AI services for electromobility: charging recommendations based on availability predictions, a conversational AI interface for natural user interaction, scalable service configuration, and team leadership.
My academic home was the Social Cognitive Systems Group at Bielefeld University, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kopp, first as a research assistant (2015 to 2021), then as a postdoctoral researcher (2022 to 2023). In my PhD thesis Social Motorics, I developed a probabilistic, hierarchical model of embodied communication grounded in predictive coding: perception, production, and coordination between agents all constrained by the same free energy principle. I remain fascinated by how humans form dynamic meaning representations together, and by what these mechanisms can teach us about building more meaningful, human compatible AI.
My background is in Cognitive Science (BSc, University of Osnabrück) and Intelligent Systems (MSc, Bielefeld University). Today, besides industrial AI, I explore how modern LLMs, multiagent systems, and MLOps practices connect back to those foundations. See my publications and CV for details.
